About
the Interim Co-Director Role:
East Michigan Environmental Action Council (EMEAC) is seeking a
visionary, talented, and resourceful leader to serve as an interim co-director
of the organization. The position runs from 6/1/2021 through 12/31/2021. The
global pandemic resulted in the temporary closing of the Cass Commons, a vital
community resource. The closure of the Commons also caused a precipitous drop
in revenue. In spite of these obstacles, the EMEAC team put young activists
going door to door in several neglected neighborhoods of Detroit’s Black
community where they were trained, delivered important community education and
worked to Get Out The Vote. This dual
foundation — the liberated space we call the Commons nurturing and creating
community and outreach work — are critical additions to EMEAC’s environmental
justice and educational projects, expanding and deepening EMEAC’s place in the
struggle for community empowerment.
The role of the co-director will be to advance the organization’s dual frameworks of locally rooted and
nationally impactful community organizing and stewardship of the Cass Corridor
Commons as a vibrant, viable space for grassroots political and cultural
presence in 21st century Detroit as we transition into a post pandemic
world. The organization was at a crucial
transition point before the pandemic struck. We are looking for a special
leader — one who can make a significant contribution to carrying on the
powerful programmatic initiatives above, raise funds to maintain and grow EMEAC
and the Commons, and, with our co-director Dee Collins, develop a plan and
vision for the future of EMEAC and the Commons.
Such a plan might include the interim co-director staying on or not. We
are looking for a strategic and dynamic leader who brings experience in
institution building and grassroots political leadership. EMEAC is an
organization with $250K annual budget and approximately $2M in property and
assets. Experience in Detroit is desired but not required, if the right
person is willing to relocate.
The ideal co-director
for EMEAC is confident in their leadership experience managing social justice
programs and institution building. They are ready to ask questions, jump
in, and co-create new visions. They
listen well and work well in a variety of teams and collaboration. They
take care of their health and well-being in such a way that allows them to be
fully present and encourage others to be at their best.
While we appreciate
all applications, experience in administrative leadership is a requirement of
the position.
The salary ranger for
this part time position is $40K-$42K annually.
We offer full health care benefits.
Below are the shared
responsibilities of the Co-Director role (current job position working
closely with the current Financial Director) and the combined skills we are
seeking. These may be divided between the two Directors as appropriate.
