Doing What We Do: Positive Peer Productions

The youth that make up EMEAC's Positive Peer Productions often get questions on how they "do what they do." That is, how did they create the various "What's Mixing?" videos? What is the process they used to create storyboards? Or to shoot the footage? Or finally get the videos up online so that community members can see them?

We decided to create a series of videos that would answer these questions. This video shows one of the first Positive Peer Productions meeting at Palmer Park Preparatory Academy in Detroit, Michigan. We started by unpacking language to help better understand what youth will be doing as members of the Positive Peer Productions. 

Eventually, these youth will learn what environmental justice, food justice, and media justice is and how they connect. They then will use that knowledge to shape what they learn into media messages for their peers, younger children, their parents, caregivers and educators!

With the cold Michigan weather officially here, now is a great time to dig through the EMEAC archives and remember the days when warmer weather inspired us to create "cool" food. This film was an official submission to EMEAC's Green Screen competition in 2014. It is a great film that demonstrates young people making and enjoying healthy food that anybody can make!

Priscilla Interviews: Tasting Greens

Part of the work that EMEAC's Ready 2 Grow program does is create spaces where young people can engage in the process of growing food. By learning about things like why healthy dirt or clean water is essential to growing healthy sustainable food, young people learn about the environment in a way that is not only hands on, but tasty too!
Ready 2 Grow's environmental educator, Priscilla Dziubek, works in Detroit classrooms with young people ranging from kindergarden to middle school. As a result, she gets the benefit of seeing young people take what is often their first bites of food they've grown with their own hands. This video is of young people at the Palmer Park Prepatory Academy in Detroit tasting their first taste of greens that were grown in the school garden.
